Outcomes and Level Descriptions for Levels 2-5

Investigating

  • Investigating Level 2
When given a focus question and familiar situation, contributes elementary ideas about which variables and procedures, collects and makes limited records of data and can say whether what happened was expected.
  • Investigating Level 3
Shows some awareness of the need for fair testing and makes simple predictions; collects and organises numerical data and descriptive information using simple tables, diagrams and graphs: and identifies main features, patterns and difficulties in the investigations.

    5AT parts of the above
    7AT all of the above
  • Investigating Level 4
Plans and conducts different types of investigations, taking account of the main variables, collects data using repeat trials or replicates; explains patterns in data or information prepared in different formats; and makes general suggestions for improving the investigation.

    9AT
  • Investigating Level 5
Interprets at situation to formulate a plausible relationship to investigate using experimental techniques, including the control of several variables and the use of preliminary trials or various information sources; develops scientific explanations that are consistent with the data; and makes specific suggestions for improving the investigation.

Life and Living

  • Life and Living Level 2
Understands that needs, features and functions of living things are related and change over time.
  • Life and Living Level 3
Understands that living things have features that form systems which determine their interaction with the environment.
  • Life and Living Level 4
Understands that systems can interact and that such interactions can lead to change.
  • Life and Living Level 5
Understands the models and concepts that are used to explain the processes that connect systems and lead to change.
