Get involved

There are many ways that you can help to protect, conserve and restore the biodiversity within your local area. Here are a few to get you started.

How you can help

Become familiar with both the plants and animals in your local community. Find out which ones are locally native and which ones are introduced-are any of them a pest or weed?

Use this website to find out the soil type of your local area. Then find out which local plants grow on this soil. Once you have identified these plants use as many of them as possible in your home garden and school grounds.

Visit one of these native plant nurseries if you intend buying some local native plants:

Zanthorrea Nursery

APACE

Boola Wongin Nursery

Lullfitz Nursery

Wildflora Garden Centre

Leschenault Community Nursery

Work with a group of friends and design a survey to see what native animals live in your neighbourhood (eg birds, mammals, frogs, reptiles or butterflies. (See ‘Useful links and Resources’ for an example of a bird survey sheet).

Tell us about the type of activities you are involved with to help protect biodiversity at your school or local community. Your story may inspire others to get involved.
